The internal organs of the body Malignant mesothelioma can be defined as cancer that atypical mesothelial cells and start dividing without any order. Most mesothelioma patients have a history of exposure to asbestos.

Malignant mesothelioma can be divided into three main types, namely

  • Epithelioid
  • Sarcomatoid
  • Mixed/biphasic
Of epithelioid this is the most common (50% to 70%), and the best chance of recovery. Sarcomatoid kind having 7% to 20% of the cases, while mixed / biphasic shape as seen in 20% to 35% of the cases.

Roughly the total number types of mesothelioma occurs in the chest cavity (pleura) and is known as pleural mesothelioma. Cancer affecting the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) is called peritoneal mesothelioma and what influences the bag, as the space around the heart (pericardial cavity) is called pericardial mesothelioma. Mesothelioma may also affect the protective layer of the testicles. The last two types of cases are quite rare.

The diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma

Mesothelioma tumor can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). So if there are symptoms such as shortness of breath, pain / abdominal swelling or chest pain, you should consult your doctor.

After the first X-rays and scans, the doctor may look inside the chest cavity (in case of pleural tumor) device, called a stethoscope and a test called thoracoscopy. In the case of the tumor in the peritoneum of the doctor can go for laparoscopy with a tool called peritoneoscope. Finally, the abnormal tissue has been found, a biopsy, resulting in an unnatural portion of the cut tissue and placed under the microscope for study.

After a confirmed diagnosis of mesothelioma is also important to the stages ie whether to define it. At a localized stage or at an advanced stage In the localized stage cancer in the lining of the thoracic cavity or the diaphragm or the lungs. Advanced malignant mesothelioma can be divided into three phases, namely Phase II, III and IV again. In stage II, cancer spread beyond the chest lining and lymph nodes in stage III it spreads to the chest, the center of the chest, heart, through the diaphragm, or abdominal lining, etc. The last or fourth stage is one whose cancer has spread to distant organs.

Treatment

Depending on the stage of the cancer, the location and state of health, age and medical history of the patient, 3 types of combined treatment of malignant mesothelioma patients (tumor removal), prior to surgery, radiation therapy (with high energy radiation) and chemotherapy (using combinations of drugs). For the rest, if there is an accumulation of fluid in the chest or abdomen, the doctor must drain and the process is seen as Thoracentesis and paracentesis respectively.
